It was truly a learning experience for both mommy & daddy.
Wayne fell ill yesterday, on the second day of the new year.
He started running a fever at 38 plus degrees in the morning and we thought we’d give him some paracetemol and he’d be better. However, his fever persisted and went up to 39 degrees. As it was a Sunday, iKids (Wayne’s paedi Dr Irene Chan’s clinic) was closed. We chose to bring him to the GP at TMC instead in the early afternoon. The medicine we gave earlier must have had some effect as his temperate dropped to 38.3 degrees at the clinic. Which resulted in the doctor dismissing his case as ‘normal’ fever and giving him more medicine plus antibiotics. Mommy and daddy were sceptical. In that 3 minutes we were with the doctor, he gave mommy & daddy zero assurance and we had zero confidence in him. It was a bad experience. Plus the fact that he gave out the antibiotics so easily made mommy & daddy even more sceptical of his competence. Anyway we went home not feeling any more assured than before we arrived at the clinic. And Wayne got increasingly whiny and clingy in the afternoon despite giving him nurofen, our poor little darling must have felt really awful.
Mommy felt so helpless as mommy couldn’t make little Wayne baby feel any better other than to cuddle him and smodder him with kisses and strokes of love. Other than giving him the nurofen which could only be taken at 6 hourly intervals, in between we really didn’t know what else to do other than sponging Wayne. Mommy’s heart really melted as mommy saw our normally active little boy weak and lethargic and just looking miserable.
Mommy just waited and waited for Wayne’s temperature to subside after giving him the medicine from TMC, while daddy sponged Wayne’s neck, forehead and limbs with water. However, in the evening, daddy again measured his temperature and instead of going down, it was now 39.9 degrees!! Mommy got really worried and decided we should just bring Wayne to KK Children’s hospital. No more waiting.
When we got to KK Children’s, mommy was so disheartened to see so many people! The waiting time must be at least 4 to 5 hours! Thankfully we decided to queue, and when we got to the screening nurses (which just took half hour of waiting), the nurse measured Wayne’s temperature at 40 degrees and gave us priority queue and directed us straight to Room 11 to see the doctor. And mommy’s heart really dropped to the floor again. Was it so serious that we could skip the dozens and dozens of people waiting? Was our little Wayne in any danger? Mommy really panicked. Mommy & daddy’s heart really ached for our little Wayne, mommy would rather be sick and hurting than to let Wayne feel any pain and discomfort at all.
When we finally got to see the doctor, immediately they gave Wayne another round of paracetemol, placed a urine bag on him to collect urine for a test, and gave us water and napkins to sponge Wayne. We also had to feed Wayne some glucose water. After a few hours, doctors concluded that Wayne had a viral infection, which meant that antibiotics would not work on him (See.. aren’t we glad we didn’t take the antibiotics the TMC doc gave out so easily). Finally when his temperature was down to 38 degrees, we could go home. Mommy & daddy were relieved and exhausted at the same time… phew…
Well through this experience, at least now mommy & daddy know how to manage a high fever. And we’ve learnt how to administer the various fever medicine effectively.
At KK Hosp : The urine sample container, glucose water and water to sponge Wayne
Can you guess what this is?? Hehe, its a urine bag sticked over his little birdie to collect urine sample
The next morning, our little Wayne woke up much happier and could play with us, making mommy & daddy happy, though with his fever still.. but at least everything is in control.
Mommy & daddy loves you lots sweetie, it will take another 3 to 5 days, but you WILL get well soon!
