Mommy is so so proud of Wayne, as today marks the seventh day he has been in school, the first full week he has 'survived' in this new environment, this new routine of his pre-school years.
It has been some what a roller coaster ride of emotions this week, as we watched Wayne go through a tough phase of adapting to pre-school. While I think overall he is doing a great job adapting.. it must still be tough for him.
It hasn't been easy. Since Wednesday, the 5th school day, Wayne has been crying and whining every morning from the time he puts on his uniform till he reaches school. He tells mommy he doesn't want to go to school as he is afraid of the dark. He asks me not to go to work. He asks me not to bring him to Mindchamps. He tells me he doesn't like school. It breaks mommy's heart seeing my little boy so upset each morning. And each morning as we part, he will be sobbing - in between tears, my brave little boy will manage a "see you later mama"... as he goes over to one of the teachers.
Each day during noon time.. its like scary time for Wayne. Thats when they switch off the lights and Wayne has to go through two hours of darkness which he seems so afraid of. Mommy can't help wonder if he really is scared or if he is just refusing to sleep. Mommy hopes its the latter. It would be so scary for a little kid barely 3 years old if he really had to sit through the dark for tow whole hours feeling scared.
And then I guess when that scary 2 hours is over, Wayne would be happy again playing and participating in class. Cos each day when its evening and I pick him up, I see him so happy playing with the kids.
Except for Thursday, when Wayne had injured his little last toe in class. It was a small scratch but enough to make him quite shaken from the slight bleeding on his toe. He was quite upset that evening, very worried over his 'injury'. But the next day he was fine, and almost forgot about his injury.
Seeing him upset that day coupled with the morning cryings, plunged mommy's mood on Friday and got me quite worried over whether Wayne was able to cope. I spent the Friday upset, wondering if we were being too harsh on Wayne making him go through this. Then I realized that I was being too emotional. Thanks daddy for pulling me up again, with his rationalism and reminding me again how well Wayne was actually coping and that I shouldn't be taking his morning 'complains' and crying as a reflection of how he was doing the whole day. I needed more assurance so I left work early today to see how he was doing in class. I observed him from outside for about 45 minutes and he did seem quite happy in class. He was making mashed potato this afternoon.
Mommy, grandma and grandpa picked him up at 5pm and he was so happy to see them and he proudly showed grandma and grandpa his classroom, where he slept and even brought them to the gym to 'show off'.
Nap times was still a challenge for him Miss Serene told us, with him crying on and off for that 2 hours, but Miss Serene asked us to persevere on and told us that for some other kids, it took them 2 months to be able to really get use to sleeping in class but they managed to in the end and she was sure, one day, Wayne would also overcome his fear, growing stronger out of it all.
Mommy felt much encouraged and left the school feeling much happier and relieved. I should feel really happy that Wayne has been able to stay full day in class with not much problems apart from nap times. For the morning cryings, I should know better through friend's experiences and expect that for at least 2 to 3 months and know that its normal and not get all upset by it.
It may be tough but I'm sure Wayne would be able to fully adapt given time. Mommy will persevere and continue to encourage him each day, and one day he will just surprise us by stopping the morning crying and being able to sleep in school. Jia you, Wayne darling!
